Auto theft can spoil an otherwise blissful holiday season. State Farm(R) claims data reflected that in the previous year, more than 9,000 vehicles were stolen between November 12 and December 31. Said period is the prime time for holiday travel and shopping and seasons like this is the favorite of thieves. Last year, over 1.2 million vehicles were stolen causing over $7 billion in losses the information was divulged by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The holiday season is the perfect time for thieves to roam around and accomplish their plans. This time of the year, mall parking lots are filled due to the lengthened store hours. Also, families are excited to pack up for one memorable travel. Moreover, authorities are warning the people to take necessary precautions to avoid theft.

Authorities have also given steps to secure your vehicle against auto theft. First, you must always lock your car and roll up the windows when the vehicle is parked. Second, never forget to bring with you your car keys. Third, avoid hiding your car keys around the car for it will be easy for thieves to search for them. When parking inside a commercial lot or garage, give only the ignition key to the attendant. Fourth, cover your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Thieves can use the number to get a duplicate key. Securing a vehicle is one of the many musts that a car owner should do in order to protect their investments. As summer progresses, trends show that there will be more vehicles stolen this season as compared to the other months of the year. H.E.A.T. or the Help Eliminate Auto Thefts offers tips to car owners on how to protect their vehicles.

According to the organization, warm weather during the summer months may lead to carelessness on the part of motorists in securing their vehicles. This will, of course, open a window for thieves to steal their vehicle. This month is the National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month and H.E.A.T.’s tips could not come at a better time.

As July progresses, we are approaching the month when the highest number of auto thefts happens compared to other months. This is according to the Auto Theft Prevention Authority.

This is backed up by Col. Peter C. Munoz, the director of the Michigan State Police, saying: “Michigan typically experiences the most auto thefts in August, and nationally, the most auto thefts occur in July. It is important to practice auto theft prevention throughout the summer, whether at home or on vacation.”

“While the summer months mean vacations and cook-outs with family and friends, they also bring car thieves looking to steal exposed property and vehicles,” said Terri Miller, the director of H.E.A.T. “It is important that people keep their guard high by rolling up their windows, locking their doors and putting car tops up, even when running a quick errand,” Miller added.  Read more...

Car insurance customers in Essex have been urged not to give opportunistic thieves the chance to break into their automobiles. Police in the area have therefore issued advice on how drivers could best avoid becoming a victim of vehicle crime. They suggested that motorists ensure they only park in safe and well-lit areas to ensure they do not attract unwanted attention from would-be thieves.

Lorna Watson, the south eastern crime reduction officer, also suggested that using security devices is a good way to deter opportunistic criminals. She explained that it takes just one minute for a car thief to steal property left inside a vehicle. “It takes a lot longer and can be frustrating for the owner to deal with the insurance company, have any damage to the vehicle repaired or to arrange alternative transport,” she explained.
